good fats

Good fats are an important part of a healthy and balanced diet. Here are some of reasons our bodies need fat:

  • Your body needs fat to absorb the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.
  • Fat is needed to prevent essential fatty acid deficiency.
  • Fat is part of every cell membrane in the body. It helps transport nutrients and metabolites across cell walls.
  • Your body uses fat to make a variety of other building blocks needed for everything from hormones to immune function.
  • After four to six hours without food, fat provides back-up energy.

Research also suggests a positive association between omega-3 fatty acids and brain development. Adding omega-3 fatty acids to your diet may help improve both early brain development and middle aged brain development, which may slow the onset of cognitive decline as you age.

What are good fats and what do they do?

Good fats are the monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats found in Crystal Margarine. Good fats have been shown to:

  • improve cholesterol levels
  • may reduce risk factors of heart disease and stroke
  • may reduce the risk of diabetes
  • could promote healthy nerve activity
  • can help to improve vitamin absorption
  • can help to maintain a healthy immune system
  • can help to promote cell development

What are bad fats and what do they do?

Saturated and trans fats are fats to avoid. Saturated fats are typically solid at room temperature, such as animal fats and butter. Bad fats have been shown to:

  • raise ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL)
  • may lower ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL)
  • can increase the risk factors for coronary heart disease and stroke

Crystal Margarine is a valuable source of good monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, helping you to stay on the right track for eating healthy, without sacrificing taste.

It’s important to understand that there are 2 types of cholesterol; HDL and LDL.

What’s the difference?

HDL or High Density Lipoprotein is considered the ‘good cholesterol’ because it takes cholesterol away from your arteries. LDL or Low Density Lipoprotein is considered the ‘bad cholesterol’ because it takes cholesterol from your liver to your body tissue. This can build up on the walls of your arteries, narrowing their size. For optimal heart health it’s important to keep your bad cholesterol low and your good cholesterol high.
