what is "plant-based" anyways?

Many people associate plant-based eating with a vegetarian or vegan diet. Though Crystal Margarine is vegan, we take more of a plant-based approach to food. Plant-based eating is less of a diet and more of a lifestyle. It’s simply prioritizing foods that come from plant sources such as produce, nuts, legumes, beans, oils, beans, and whole grains. Anyone can benefit from adding more plants to their diet- even the most die-hard carnivores! You don’t need to change your entire diet to benefit from plants. Any added plants to your diet contribute to an overall healthier lifestyle!

Adding more plants into your diet is as easy as 1-2-3

  1. Fill Up on Plants: Many dieticians recommend filling half your plate with fruit or vegetables for each meal. Adding vegetables into your usual foods makes this easy. Cooking a pot of spaghetti for dinner? Bulk up your pasta sauce with cooked lentils. Mac and Cheese on the menu? Pureed butternut squash makes cheese sauces extra rich!

  2. Try A #Meatless Meal Once a Week: You don’t need to give up meat to benefit from a plant-based lifestyle. Even one meatless meal a week can improve nutrition and reduce your carbon footprint. Remember, meatless doesn’t mean tasteless! Try one of our many meatless recipes today. (link to recipes page with “meatless” as a filter)

  3. Go For Good Fats: Not all fats are created equal. Saturated and trans fats raise “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and increase your risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. Saturated fats, such as animal fats and butter, are typically solid when room temperature. Good fats on the other hand, are an essential part of a healthy and well-balanced diet. Our bodies need them to absorb fat soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K. Good fats from plant sources, such as canola oil, are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Crystal Margarine is an excellent source of good fat, and an easy ingredient swap for butter!
